Code of Professional Conduct
The Veterinary Council has a number of 'standard setting' functions under the Act. The Code of Professional Conduct is a key document in the setting of professional standards. The principles of expertise, performance, behaviour, integrity and accountability as defined in the Code of Professional Conduct are those expected of competent and reasonable veterinarians in New Zealand.
The Code of Professional Conduct is the essential document by which veterinarians are evaluated in terms of complaints, and by which decisions are made on any professional issues regarding how and why and what veterinarians do.

Review of the Code of Professional Conduct
Under the 1994 Veterinarians Act the Code was needed to define all aspects of a veterinarian’s performance.
The 2005 Act provided for competency matters to be dealt with by Council in a separate way from discipline matters. This separate competence pathway is now in place.
A joint working party, with representatives from the Council, NZVA, the Agricultural Compounds and Veterinary Medicines (ACVM) Group of NZFSA, MAF and the public is currently developing proposals for a revised Code of Conduct.
