Council meeting summary

26 March 2026

The Vet Council held its first quarterly meeting of the year at the end of February. The following is a summary of some of the topics that were discussed.

The meeting started with welcoming Dr Jessie Levens as our newly elected Council member. Dr Kylie Lawson was re-elected as Chair for 2026 and Prof. Jenny Weston was elected as Deputy Chair.

The Council is starting work on a new strategic plan which will be ready to share later in the year, and approved the budget and annual plan for 2026/27.

A new charter for the Finance and Risk Committee was also approved. The charter outlines the committee’s role in supporting the Council with financial oversight, and audit and strategic risk management. Recruitment for new external members (one finance expert and one from a healthcare background) will begin shortly.

The Council received reports from the management team as part of the Council’s regular oversight of operations. This included a report from the Chief Executive on hosting a meeting with international veterinary regulators in December last year.

Updates on current projects were also received.

The next Council meeting will be held in May.
