Update: VetNet-Biosecurity

29 May 2026

There has been a high level of interest in the VetNet-Biosecurity initiative, so we wanted to share an update with the profession and thank everyone who has taken the time to complete the training and submit applications. We appreciate the work and commitment that has gone into supporting this initiative

Earlier this year, the Vet Council sought expressions of interest from practices across the country to be part of VetNet–Biosecurity - a new network of veterinarians who can quickly respond to major biosecurity issues. To date, we have received 130 Authorised Person (AP) applications with the aim of establishing a network of 200 APs able to act under the Biosecurity Act 1993 in the event of a foot and mouth disease outbreak.

To be appointed, veterinarians must have completed MPI’s VetNet-Biosecurity modules on the Vet Councils LMS and submitted their application for a statutory appointment of AP status via the Vet Council.

The training modules are available to any veterinarians wanting to upskill. For instructions on how to access them, please click the button below.

Instructions

How the appointment process works

1. Once an application is received, Vet Council staff review it and assess whether the applicant meets the technical and professional standards. This includes confirming the veterinarian’s recent practice history and that they have good standing within the profession. The application is then forwarded to MPI's Regulatory Oversight and Support team.

2. MPI will prepare an Instrument of Appointment for the Chief Veterinary Officer to sign. Once signed, all sensitive documentation is securely destroyed in line with privacy obligations.

3. Once approved, the Instrument of Appointment is then shared with the Vet Council, the veterinarian, and their manager, before the veterinarian receives their official AP identification card.
